Formula 1 Must Decide on Next Engine Regulations This Year, Says CEO Stefano Domenicali

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stated that the championship leadership cannot afford delays. Although new power unit regulations will only come into effect in 2026, F1 must already decide on the next generation of engines, tentatively planned for 2031 or earlier.

Given the lengthy development process—discussions on the current rules began as early as 2021—the concept for the new engines needs to be approved as soon as possible, ideally within this year. Support is growing within the paddock for a return to simpler engines. These are likely to feature a higher number of cylinders and a significantly simplified hybrid system.

Rather than an aggressive shift to electric motors, the main trend will be the use of 100% sustainable fuel combined with a powerful internal combustion engine. Domenicali supports the FIA’s vision that cars should become lighter and less complex. Modern batteries make the cars too heavy, so reducing weight will improve maneuverability and lower development costs for manufacturers.
