Former Formula 1 Driver Alessandro Zanardi Dies at 59
Alessandro Zanardi competed in 41 Formula 1 Grands Prix, lost both legs in a 2001 crash, became a Paralympic champion, and returned to motorsport. He died at 59 following a severe cycling accident in 2020.
Alessandro Zanardi, former Formula 1 driver, has died at the age of 59.
Zanardi competed in 41 Formula 1 Grands Prix from 1991 to 1999, driving for teams including Jordan, Minardi, Lotus, and Williams. His life took a tragic turn in 2001 during the Championship Auto Racing Teams series when he was involved in a severe crash that resulted in the loss of both his legs.
After the accident, Zanardi began using a handcycle and later competed in this discipline at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games, where he won four gold medals. In 2004, he returned to racing in touring car championships, and in 2019, he even participated in the 24 Hours of Daytona endurance race.
In 2020, Zanardi suffered a serious accident during a cycling training session when he collided with a truck. He sustained severe injuries and only returned home in 2021, after which he did not appear in public.
